How do I start a "Command Prompt" or "MS-DOS Prompt"?

A Command Prompt, also known as an MS-DOS Prompt, provides a command-line interface to the Operating System. A typical command prompt looks something like this:

The method for accessing a command prompt varies, depending on which version of Windows you are running:

Windows NT, 2000, XP or 2003

  1. On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run.
     
  2. In the Run dialog box, type: cmd
     
  3. Click OK.

Windows 95, 98 or Me

  1. On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run.
     
  2. In the Run dialog box, type: command
     
  3. Click OK.
